A volumetric truck is a batching plant on wheels: raw stone, sand, cement and water, blended to your exact spec at the kerb. Here's how it works — and, honestly, when it isn't the right tool.
How a Volumetric Mixer Works
Open up a volumetric truck and you won't find wet concrete. You'll find separate bins of stone and sand, a sealed cement bin, an onboard water tank and admixture tanks. Your concrete doesn't exist yet — that's the point.
Calibrated gates meter
Each material feeds through calibrated gates set to your mix design — so much stone, so much sand, so much cement, in exact proportion.
The auger mixes
The metered materials drop into a mixing auger and are blended into concrete seconds before it leaves the chute.
The meter counts
Discharge is metered as it happens. The batch ticket records the mix, the consistence and the exact volume — which is also the bill.
Because batching happens at the point of pour, the operator can adjust mix, strength and slump between pours — several different mixes from one visit, off one truck.
The Honest Pros and Cons
Where volumetric wins
- You pay for what you pour. Billing is on metered, discharged volume. Order 3m³, use 2.6m³, pay for 2.6m³.
- Fresh at the point of pour. No in-transit hydration clock — the mix is blended seconds before it hits the chute.
- Change grade mid-visit. Footings at C25/30, then a C8/10-strength oversite mix, same truck, same visit.
- No waste economics. No over-order waste, no returned-concrete disposal fees, no part-load penalty — small loads from 0.5m³ are covered on mini mix & small loads.
Where it doesn't
- Price per cube on big orders. Indicative 2026 market rates put volumetric concrete at roughly £110–£150/m³ against £100–£150/m³ from a large batching plant — so on a big, straightforward pour with easy access, a plant order can come in cheaper per cube. - Very large continuous pours. One truck carries materials for up to around 9m³ per visit, and we simply reload for bigger pours — but where hundreds of cubes must arrive without a pause, a plant feeding a convoy of drum trucks is the right tool, and we'll say so.

The Time-Clock Nuance
Drum-mixed concrete starts hydrating at the plant — the chemistry begins the moment water meets cement, miles from your site. The historic British Standard guideline was to discharge within two hours; that prescriptive clause was dropped in BS 8500:2023, though the Concrete Society still calls two hours a reasonable rule of thumb. Guidance, then — not law.
But the practical point stands: drum concrete is racing a clock from the moment it's batched; ours isn't batched until it's at your site. A slow crossing of the city costs a drum load some of its working life. It costs our load nothing, because on our truck it's still stone, sand and cement.
Change the Mix Mid-Visit
Because the batch happens at your kerb, the spec isn't locked in at some plant across town. Pour reinforced footings at C25/30, then switch the gates and pour a C8/10-strength oversite mix — one truck, one visit. Consistence adjusts the same way: S3 for general work, S4 for trench fill, changed at the point of batching.
That's also why we never add water on site to "loosen up" a mix — unauthorised water invalidates the performance of the mix and weakens it. We don't need the shortcut: if you want it more workable, we batch it more workable, properly.
Quantity stays flexible too. Decide on the day, within what the truck carries, and pay the metered volume. Get a rough figure from the concrete calculator before you call — rough is fine; the meter settles the fine print. A Batch Ticket From Calibrated Metering
Every load gets a batch ticket: mix and strength class, consistence, aggregate size, cement type, batch time and metered volume. On a volumetric truck that record comes straight from the onboard calibrated metering — the same mechanism that decides your bill prints your proof.
Our mixes are batched to the strength and durability requirements of BS 8500 / BS EN 206. If your job needs identity testing, we'll fill cube moulds on request and point you to UKAS-accredited labs. And if anyone insists on water being added on site, that goes on the ticket too — in writing, where it belongs.

Strength comes from the mix design, not the truck it arrived in.
